Pastor Message and Prayer

4/21

"He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them."

                                                                                                           LUKE 24:30

Recognizing Jesus in a word and sacrament

READ LUKE, CHAPTER 24, VERSUS 13 TO 53

The two travelers on the road toe Emmaus are weighed down by sadness and disappointment.  Their mood is morose.  All their hopes in Jeuss were dashed by the crucifixion.  Their initial dialogue with Jesus is touched by sarcasm,  "Are you the only visitor to Jerusalem who does not know of the things that have taken place there in these days?" Jesus' questions, "what sort of things?" only adds to their dismay.  The two travelers tell Jesus about the crucifixion and the report of women about the resurrection.  They conclude that the women's story could not be verified - "but him they did not see."

The Lord then explained the Law, the prophets, and all the Scriptures to them, to show them that all that happened was according to God's plan.  Still they did not recognize him.  But when he sat down with them and repeated the actions of the Last Supper, they recognized him.  Then he vanished from their sight.  Their sadness and disappointment now turned to joy, and they rushed back to Jerusalem.  There they were greeted with the news of the Lord's having appeared to Simon Peter.  Suddenly the Lord was in their midst and he opened to all of them the meaning of the Scripture about himself.

Twenty centuries separate us from that first Easter day.  Yet, every celebration of the Eucharist is an Emmaus experience.  We hear the proclamation of the Lord's word, and we share the breaking of the bread, the Eucharist.

When I read the Scriptures do I hear the Lord speaking to me?

Prayer Starter: Stay with us, Lord.  When life seems dark and disappointing, may you abiding presence light my way.

Fr. Joachim
